Two victories for Italian driver Barberini in the Abarth Selenia Trophy at Imola

• Driving the Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione, Barberini came home first ahead of young fellow Italian Mabellini in Race 1 and Finnish driver Pajuranta in race 2.
• In the Abarth 500 Corse category, the very young Lazzaroni (Ita) won twice, with Aurora Coria (Ita) in second place.

Success for Italy at the first event in the Abarth Selenia Trophy calendar, held on the Imola circuit on Sunday 29 April: reigning champion Cosimo Barberini, driving an Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione, won both the day's races, ahead of young fellow Italian Andrea Mabellini in the first and Finnish driver Juuso Pajuranta in the second. But these were not easy wins, in view of the technical difficulty of the Imola track, with its continuous climbs and downhills, which highlighted all the 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione and Abarth 500 Assetto Corse cars' excellent handling and stability. In the category reserved for the latter model - the entry level in automotive racing - victory went to very young Italian driver Filippo Lazzaroni, who finished ahead of young Aurora Coria, winner in the Women's class.
Both races were extremely exciting. In the first, Barberini got a fast start from pole position and held on to first place, while behind him Mabellini, Appelqvist (SWE) and Pajuranta (FIN) battled fiercely for second with some spectacular overtaking (although fair play was always strictly observed). Barberini took advantage of this situation to extend his lead to a very safe margin, which however he wiped out three laps from the end with a mistake on the Rivazza bend, which allowed his rivals to catch up. Barberini managed to hold on to first place to the finishing line, coming home ahead of Mabellini - who recorded the fastest lap at an average of 143.595 km/h - and Pajuranta, who overtook Appelqvist on the final bend.
To make the second race more spectacular, the Abarth Selenia Trophy rules requires the first 8 finishers in Race 1 to start in reverse order: the winner starts from the fourth row in 8th position and the 8th to finish in pole, so that the fastest drivers start from the back of the field and are forced to do some exciting overtaking to obtain the lead. So after a few laps, the same four drivers as in Race 1 were again fighting for victory, and Barberini again achieved the win, ahead of Pajuranta and Mabellini. Appelqvist was fourth again.
The winner, Cosimo Barberini, was very happy: "Imola's a circuit where you can't get away with the slightest error and a moment's carelessness can lose you a race: in Race 1 I went into Rivazza too fast and almost ran off the track into the sand. Luckily I managed to control my Abarth and hang on to the lead, but my heart was in my mouth!".
Barberini heads the overall Abarth Selenia Trophy ranking with 51 points, followed by Mabellini and Pajuranta, tied on 34.
At Imola the fans from "Scorpionship" - the official Abarth community - had a thrilling day, enjoying the meeting together with the drivers in the paddock. They and the many fans at the circuit also had the chance to try out the Abarth range, comprising the Abarth 595, 595 Pista, 595 Turismo, 595 Competizione, 695 Biposto and Abarth 124 spider, on the roads around Imola and, above all, the exciting opportunity to drive the same brilliant cars on the mythical Santerno track with professional drivers at their side, for a burst of pure adrenalin. This opportunity will again be on offer at the other upcoming Abarth Selenia Trophy events: the next will be on the Le Castellet circuit in France on 12 and 13 May.

Zwei Siege für den Italiener Barberini bei der Abarth Selenia Trophy in Imola

Mit dem Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione gewann Barberini beide Läufe. In der Kategorie Abarth 500 Corse siegte der junge Filippo Lazzaroni.
Voller Erfolg für die italienischen Fahrer beim Saisonauftakt der Abarth Selenia Trophy in Imola: Bei den ersten Läufen, die am letzten Aprilwochenende stattfanden, siegten die Tifosi auf ganzer Linie. Auf dem höchst anspruchsvollen Kurs in der Emilia-Romagna dominierte Titelverteidiger Cosimo Barberini mit seinem Abarth 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione beide Läufe auf eindrucksvolle Weise. Der amtierende Champion gewann das erste Rennen vor seinem Landsmann Andrea Mabellini und das Zweite vor dem starken Finnen Juuso Pajuranta. Das komplexe Setup der Strecke mit seinen Kurven, den Steigungen und dem Gefälle passt hervorragend zu den Racer-Qualitäten sowohl des 695 Assetto Corse Evoluzione als auch zum 500 Assetto Corse. Die Fahrzeuge zeichnen sich durch hervorragende Qualitäten in puncto Handling aus und hängen perfekt am Gas, dementsprechend begeistert sind die Pilotinnen und Piloten vom Zusammenspiel der Technik und der besonderen Rennstrecke. Speziell für die jungen Fahrerinnen und Fahrer der 500 Assetto Corse stellte der Saisonauftakt eine besondere Herausforderung dar. Denn die Talente starten in einer Klasse, die als hohes Einstiegslevel in den Motorsport gilt. Hier gewann der Italiener Filippo Lazzaroni vor Aurora Coria, die Siegerin in der Damenwertung wurde.
Beide Rennen der Abarth 695 Assetto Corse waren sehr spannend: Schon in der ersten Runde des ersten Laufes gelang Barberini ein perfekter Start von der Pole Position aus - und er behielt die Führung auch. Aber hinter ihm kämpften der Italiener Mabellini, der Schwede Appelqvist und der Finne Pajuranta fair, aber mit spektakulären Überholmanövern um den zweiten Platz. Barberini nutzte diese Situation, um seinen Vorsprung auszubauen. Aber drei Runden vor Schluss unterlief ihm ein Fehler und die Konkurrenten holten wieder auf. Barberini behielt die Nerven und fuhr als Erster über die Ziellinie. Zweiter wurde Mabellini, der mit 143,595 km/h die schnellste Runde schaffte und so die beiden skandinavischen Rivalen in der letzten Kurve überholen konnte.
Um das zweite Rennen spannender zu gestalten, müssen die ersten acht Fahrer des ersten Rennens in umgekehrter Reihenfolge starten: Der Sieger des ersten Laufs geht von der vierten Reihe und Position acht ins Rennen, der Achte startet von der Pole Position aus. Die schnellsten Piloten des Vortages werden auf diese Weise zu aufreibenden Überholmanövern gezwungen, wenn sie wieder vorne dabei sein wollen. Tatsächlich kämpften schon nach wenigen Runden die gleichen vier Fahrer wie im ersten Rennen um den Sieg. Barberini gewann erneut, dieses Mal vor Pajuranta und Mabellini. Appelqvist war wieder Vierter. Der zweifache Gewinner, Cosimo Barberini, war am dementsprechend am Ende des Rennwochenendes sehr glücklich: „Imola ist eine Strecke, auf der man sich nicht den geringsten Fehler erlauben darf, denn der wird innerhalb eines Augenblicks bestraft und du verlierst das Rennen. Im ersten Lauf bin ich zu schnell in die Doppelkurve Rivazza eingefahren und fast von der Strecke abgekommen. Glücklicherweise gelang es mir, meinen Abarth zu kontrollieren und nicht in den Sand abzurutschen. Da wurde ich doch kurz nervös, aber ich fing das Auto rechtzeitig wieder ein."
Barberini führt die Gesamtwertung der Abarth Selenia Trophy mit 51 Punkten an, gefolgt von Mabellini und Pajuranta mit jeweils 34 Punkten. In Imola hatten die Fans von „Scorpionship" - der offiziellen Abarth Community - daher einen besonders spannenden Tag und genossen das Treffen mit den Piloten im Fahrerlager. Sie, aber auch die vielen Fans an der Rennstrecke hatten zudem die Gelegenheit, die aktuellen Modelle von Abarth, also 595, 595 Pista, 595 Turismo, 595 Competizione, 695 Biposto und Abarth 124 Spider auf den Straßen rund um Imola zu testen. Außerdem konnte man auf der legendären Santerno-Strecke an der Seite professioneller Piloten fahren, was für Adrenalinstöße sorgte. Diese Gelegenheit wird natürlich auch an den anderen Wochenenden der Abarth Selenia Trophy geboten. Die nächsten Läufe finden am 12. und 13. Mai auf der traditionsreichen Rennstrecke von Le Castellet in Frankreich statt.
